I went to 3 countries.

Malaysia = Outskirts of KL with 2 Organizations.
http://www.yawa.org/
http://www.malaysiancare.org/index.cfm?menuid=12

Though both are sound societies based on helping children. But they have proper infrastructures to care for the children. Hence i will not concentrate in Malaysia first.

Vietnam = Hosted by Peter, Bi and another Member from AB. (Forgot his name as he did not spoke much.)

I will be preparing a set of requirements for Peter and Bi to source out in Central Vietnam as they had claimed that these areas are places where people really need help. A follow up visit is forecast in Aug 10. To be confirm when more details are given by these fellas from Vietnam. Boy germany and Cuibab, pls come along if you can.

Indonesia = Hosted by Jowyoseph and Xiungs. Many thanks to Jowyoseph for offering the spare room.

I will be preparing a set of requirements for you guys too. Follow up visit will be in July 10. Jowyoseph, we might have to travel to Padang if you can come. The place which had the earth quakes in Sept 09.

My next visit to Indonesia is a project headed by this response outfit which specialized in building houses for people in need, they call themselves Hands On Disaster Response, this is their link: http://www.cafepress.com/hodr

They are going to finish a project in Padang Indonesia. I will look into the concept of their building and might replicate the same thing.

Firstly, from my trip, i learnt that i have to make sure there is a place where i can operate from. Building a structure is the first step before any further projects can take place.

This is all the update i have in my trip.

Name: SOUL Foundation. The acronym of 'SOUL'.

Previous proposed name: Supplement of the Underprivileged Lives

Now and confirmed: Supplement of the Unitive Lives

Reason: Went through the dictionary to find a suitable word for the letter 'U' in the acronym 'SOUL'.

Checked and realized that the word 'Underprivileged' means 2nd Class. SOUL Foundation though focused in the needy but they will be groomed to become useful subjects for their society.

The word 'Unitive' have 2 meanings.

1. Capable of causing Unity - This represents the spirit of those who take up the programs which are aim at fostering peace with deeper appreciation for their lives and among all.

2. Serving to Unite - This represents our volunteer's spirit in wanting to make a difference in serving to create unity among the members of the foundation and also with the people they served.

SOUL Foundation will be aiming to build a school in Indonesia as a first step.

Our Programs caters to 4 parts.

1. Conduct activities that are focused in action-based learning. Every month we will provide 5 days of learning.

2. Every 3 months a movie screening will be done at the school compound to promote better community relations among the local people and volunteers. Awards will be given to students who had performed exemplarily in each project conducted within the 3 months.

3. Every 6 months a sack of rice will be given to the family of the child who had completed 6 programs.

4. Every Year End, we will conduct a graduation for those who successfully completed all 12 programs. Rice will be given again complete with a movie screening.

Reason to conduct the program this way:

Children in needy places will usually not be allowed any time off to do other things. As soon as they turn able, most will work at the fields till every single day comes to an end.

Programs are aimed at creating Unity, Bonds of friendship, Hope and Leadership qualities.

Giving Rice and due recognition will encourage the families to send their children to school. Plus the act of giving rice will keep everyone in the family fed and allow time off for the kids.

In future, we will recruit teachers within the local community to come forward and give academic lessons. This is one of the main intended purpose of having this school built.

Focus age group: 6 - 10 yrs old.

Expansion Programs: SOULuniform, SOULammenities, SOULclothes, SOULfood, SOULcots, SOULblankets, SOULstationary.

Will explain more when timing is right.

Conclusion:

In our life at certain point, we will wish to do some good for the people. Every individual is capable of caring for their family, loved ones and friends. A SOUL volunteer in this case will be challenged in whether they can extend that same concern to every single person be it a fellow volunteer or a needy child.

Every kid deserves the best with what the World can offer. We have it good in Singapore and we are very fortunate to experience living at such high standards. Developing the UNITIVE Spirit, will propel us towards better appreciation for humanity. It's challenging to cherish someone every single day and its even harder if you have to love someone who is a stranger.

Through Unity and doing the common good we can break new ground in achieving a higher betterment for communities which are in need. This will help us brave the grounds and achieve new heights.

So you think you are ready for a SOUL Adventure?

A Quote for all before you decide:

'A step forward to those in need will yield appreciation. Do your best and one shall have no regrets.'

I hope to secure a 8 - 10 room building which will facilitate 3 effects.

1) Temporary storage of food when conducting food giving projects.

2) Short term projects by any students or teachers who are capable of organizing fun activities for the kids in that area.

3) Education can become possible for the children if local teachers are willing to volunteer in giving lessons.

Forecast Project
-----------------

Food Giving in India, Mungod, for 250 families. Each bag worth SGD15 per family.

Details of Condiments will be given when i had finalized all food costs. A detailed food list will be mentioned in this thread.

Projected Date of Execution: July 2011

Objectives:

1) To take trial timings for food packing and distributions.

2) To measure success by using only 30 persons to complete distribution.

3) To finish the whole project in 7 days.

I will be overlooking the whole project in that country if we raise enough funds to build. Right now i am asking my architect friends to do up a simple blue print with cost of materials calculated.

An update for all...... Smile

Will be visiting potential land parcels in Sarikan, this might be one of the sites to build the School cum Aid distribution center for SOUL Foundation.

===================================================================================

Good Afternoon guys,

This is Philip here.

Budi welcome back from China....... Smile

Hartono, hope the exams went well....... Smile

I have these following questions before we fly over to visit Sarikan, Pontianak.

==================================================================

1) Land purchase.

a) Can we decide which land space we need as i have some basic drawings of the school compound?
b) We need to check the size of the land space.
c) Population number of the area as we want to make sure the school is maximized in usage.
d) We need to check the land whether its free from natural disasters or does it have any history of landslides or bush fire? As you know, when its the farming season farmers will need to burn the land to create ash as fertilizers for the ground. Our school MUST be away from these type of activities.

2) Type of building materials.

a) What type of materials are used in Sarikan?
b) Cost?
c) Water Access?
d) Drainage and electricity fittings, do we have this type of workers or business who can supply this type of materials ?

3) Cost of food.

a) How much would it cost to feed 1 kid per day. 1 Lunch + 2 snacks.
b) Or is it better to hire a full time cook to prepare meals for the children?
c) Which one is cheaper?
d) Cost of water per gallon?

4) School Furniture.

a) Any furniture shops nearby?
b) I need to bring back some costings so i can plan how much furniture we need to buy for the school.
c) Or is it cheaper/better we build everything using workers?

5) Principal and Teachers.

a) Is there someone i can speak to who can provide contacts of local principal or teachers?
b) Salaries, i need some salary table as well.

6) HIH

a) May i know what kind of support i can get from HIH can it be financial support and physical presence?

i) Financial support means sponsor building materials, school equipment, children makan, uniform/stationary, principal or teacher's salaries
ii) Physical presence means stay in Sarikan for 5 days. Coming at least once every 3 or 6 months to play with the kids, do some activities. Also a good chance for the local people to know who are the ones giving the support for the school.

b) Would HIH like to sponsor children to better government schools?

7) Ammenities.

i) Singkawang is the town. Hotel costs?
ii) Cost of one a Van or Pick-up vehicle?
iii) Any nearby hospital or medical care?

For now this are the questions i have.

Hear from you guys soon.......... Thanks !!

Regards,
GP aka Philip

Visit in Sarikan, Pontianak (INDONESIA) is completed. These are the findings and updates.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had visited Sarikan from 28 - 30th Dec 2010.

Village strength: 150 Families

In support: A classroom and lodgings from a church

SOUL Foundation will begin preparations for 3 levels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEVEL 1 - Hire full-time teachers for the children.

We found that its impossible to educate each kid according to their age group. Also our findings shows that none had any or little schooling as there are no schools in the vicinity. What we will do is hire full time teachers to cater to the immediate start of classes. For a start, we will hire 2 - 3 persons.

Cost - SGD 150 / mth / teacher

Per month - 200 x 3 = 600

Per year - 600 x 12 = SGD 7200 (Grand total)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEVEL 2 - Skilled base training

We had identified that there are no skilled base training in Sarikan. Land which is in abundance makes it a good venue to learn about farming. So we plan to purchase 3 acres of land.

Cost of 1 Acre without nearby water source: SGD 4000 (Including Purchase licenses)

Cost of 1 Acre with nearby water source: SGD 6000 (Including Purchase licenses)

Total: SGD 16000 (A rough estimate for 3 acres, 2 acres with water source.)

2 acres will be used to learn and do farming. It will allow 3 things to take place.

- Basic practice of commerce in fresh produce with nearby markets.
- Constant provision of fresh produce from the land for own comsumption.
- Purchase of seedlings for every planting phase.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 acre for 5 basic structures.

- A garage to conduct the training workshop for motorbikes. (40m x 40m = 40m2)

This garage will be used as a workshop to train the teenagers to fix motorbikes which is the main mode of transportation used in the whole of INDONESIA. This will allow job prospects in the city when the training is completed. This will also help maintain SOUL Foundation vehicles for free. In the long run, this translates to big cost savings.

- Living quarters for volunteers. (50m x 50m = 50m2)

As we will have volunteers coming every month, this will be used to provide low cost accommodation. Earnings will be used to create a resource library for usage of the teachers and students.

- SOUL Foundation office (non air-con - 50m x 50m = 50m2)

A main office , heritage corner and resource library will be created for the daily operation of the foundation.

- Toilets and washing corners (Size 50m x 50m = 50m2)

To facilitate the constant practice in sanitary behaviors/habits, its important to have the proper infrastructure.

- A shelter for indoor activities and meals. (Last Priority - 80m x 80m = 80m2)

This is to provide a contingency as part of the wet weather program if we run into the rainy seasons. All activities can still go on with this shelter.

Cost of construction per square meter: SGD 308 / m2

An estimate of 2 million Rupiah per square meter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEVEL 3 - Proper Sanitary Habits

Improper sanitary habits often increase the chance of contracting sicknesses. When one person is sick in the family, it will be easy for the others to fall sick. As the living conditions in the rural areas are less proper, its very crucial to enforce some good habits in sanitation.

We will place close supervision for children in sanitation before having meals, classes and visiting the toilets. As part of the continual effort for proper habits, its also mandatory that all those who work in the fields will clean up before having any meals. As lunch will be provided by SOUL Foundation, this will be practiced as well.

For awareness, we will show video clips which explain the importance in having good hygiene. This will be shown once every 3 months which will coincides with our movie screenings.

Meal calculation:

Cost per day per person: 1.5 SGD

For 50 child per day: 1.5 x 50 = 75

For 305 days: 75 x 305 = 22875 SGD (After deducting holidays)

Cost for 2 kitchen helpers: 200 SGD per mth

Per year: 300 x 12 = 2400 SGD

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rice giving - 85% of the attendance

For every child who is registered with SOUL Foundation's study system will receive 30 - 40 kg of rice in support. This event is held twice per year and only for those who had attended a minimum of 85% of study time in school.

Selected families who have 2 children registered with SOUL will also receive the same amount of rice.

Cost: SGD 1 per kilo

Per 40kg: 40 SGD

50 families: 40 x 50 = 2000 SGD

2 times per year: 2000 x 2 = 4000 SGD (Rice giving 2 times per year)

The cost will increase along the years as intakes will rise for students.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Providing free lunch for the children will help ease the stress on the parents. By taking care of the children during the day, it will allow one of the parents to find work. We start by cultivating the land to create fresh produce for sale. During this time, SOUL Foundation will search out job agencies which can provide part time jobs. This will allow a variety of employment for the parents choosing.

In the long run, the children will acquire the proper foundation from education and coupled with skilled training, this enhances their reach to better jobs. We hope by these effort we can successfully see improvement in the community in terms of living conditions.
