According to Pub Med Central, penile necrosis is a rare condition where the tissue of the penis starts to die due to a lack of blood flow. It often happens because of a condition called calciphylaxis, which causes the small and medium-sized arteries to harden and get blocked. This blockage leads to poor blood circulation, causing the skin and surrounding tissue to die off. What Went Wrong? Necrosis occurs when tissue cells die due to illness, injury, infection, or lack of blood flow. In this case, the ‘ubat kuat’ injection caused extensive tissue damage, turning half of the affected area black. By the time they sought medical attention at a hospital’s emergency department, it was too late to salvage the affected tissue, and the men were left with no option but to have the necrotic portions surgically removed. Misguided Motivations and the Role of Peer Influence When questioned about the motivation behind this dangerous practice, one of the youths mentioned that friends had encouraged them to try injecting the drug, claiming it would prolong their sexual performance. Additionally, none of the youths had consulted a healthcare professional before injecting the substance, indicating a lack of awareness about the potential risks. The Medical Community’s Response Healthcare professionals have been vocal in condemning the actions taken by these teenagers, stressing the importance of seeking proper medical advice when considering performance-enhancing treatments. Misusing unregulated drugs or substances can result in irreversible damage, as demonstrated by this incident.
