Dewan Rakyat burst into laughter as Anwar teases Tiong over alcohol tax [WATCH] KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat burst into laughter today when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a 10 per cent tax on alcohol and glanced over at Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Midway during the tabling of the 2026 Budget announcement, Anwar struggled to keep a straight face, prompting a wave of amusement across the chamber. The light-hearted moment drew even more laughter from lawmakers, given the recent controversy involving Tiong's ministry over a Tourism Malaysia gala dinner where alcohol was served. "The government has agreed to raise the excise duty on alcoholic beverages by 10 per cent starting from Nov 1 to curb access to alcohol and promote healthier lifestyles," he said while chuckling. Yesterday, Tiong said he regretted the confusion surrounding a gala dinner linked to Tourism Malaysia, where alcohol was served. The minister said the confusion stemmed from his oversight because he had not made any prior announcement about the gala dinner, which was held in conjunction with the Global Travel Meet exhibition. He also said the ministry takes the public's feedback on the issue seriously and appreciated Anwar's advice on the matter. The minister previously dismissed claims that alcoholic drinks served at the dinner had led to Muslim guests leaving early. He had also said the dinner was not organised by Tourism Malaysia. Earlier this week, Anwar reminded Tiong and the ministry to adhere to government policy on the serving of alcoholic drinks at government events.
