KUALA LUMPUR: Here's the irony. Singapore have secured a historic spot in the 2027 Asian Cup, while Malaysia face potential disqualification after FIFA launched a criminal probe into the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). On Tuesday, Singapore edged Hong Kong 2-1 to seal their place in the continental showpiece while Malaysia extended their winning streak with a 1-0 victory over Nepal in the qualifying campaign. However, Malaysia are in hot water for fielding seven allegedly ineligible heritage players in earlier matches. In contrast, Singapore, having just two naturalised players in their squad, proved their football is on the right track by qualifying for the Asian Cup on merit for the first time since 1984. Football critic Dr Zulakbal Abdul Karim said that FAM's decision to take shortcuts has "blown up in their face," while Singapore's patient approach is yielding results. "Singapore has a small population, but they have qualified for the Asian Cup on merit. They also use naturalised players, but they followed FIFA regulations. We wanted a quick fix, took a shortcut, and made a mistake," said Zulakbal.
